No one can stop local level elections now, says Congress general secretary Koirala

Biratnagar, February 3

Nepali Congress general secretary Shashank Koirala said on Friday no one can stop local level elections now.

Now, there will be effort to conduct elections by reaching a maximum understanding, Koirala said, adding: We should go for elections even by keeping United Democratic Madheshi Front (Madheshi Morcha) out. Time for conducting elections is running out.

Talking to journalists at Biratnagar, Koirala said: The current situation does not allow the state to amend the Constitution as per the demand of Madheshi Morcha and conduct elections.

The second largest party has stood against Constitution amendment, whereas Madheshi Morcha is in favour of Constitution amendment, he noted, adding: Now, it will be better to go for elections first rather than amending the Constitution.

Koirala suspected that the CPN-Maoist Centre, which leads the government, may not want to conduct elections. He suspected that this may be the Maoist party’s intention to prolong its stay in power.

As per an understanding reached with the Maoist party, Congress will head the government after local elections, Koirala pointed.
