New law will require officials to inform reasons for inability to issue citizenship paper

Kathmandu, February 3

The government is planning to introduce a new citizenship law, according to which officials need to inform the concerned person about the reasons for their inability to issue citizenship certificate.

While discussions are underway on the draft bill, the State Affairs Committee in Parliament had directed the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Home Affairs to make sure that people unable to acquire the citizenship certificate get information about the reasons in writing.

During a recent meeting of the panel, lawmakers Binda Pandey and Pabitra Niraula demanded that the information be provided to the concerned person within seven days.

Home Secretary Prem Kumar Rai agreed on the demand, but claimed setting the deadline of seven days would not be practical.

Following the discussion, the committee directed the government to revise the bill mentioning the provision, without mentioning any specific deadline.
