New Attorney General takes oath of office

Kathmandu, August 18

Newly appointed Attorney General Basanta Ram Bhandari took the oath of office and secrecy from Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli on Friday.

Earlier, President Bidya Devi Bhandari had appointed the senior advocate to the constitutional position following a recommendation from Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Following the appointment, a swearing-in ceremony was held at the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas in the presence of President, Vice-President, Prime Minister and other dignitaries.

The position was vacant after Attorney General Raman Kumar Shrestha resigned from his position earlier this week.

The Attorney General is the legal advisor to the Prime Minister and the government; and s/he can hold the position as long as the Prime Minister wants him/her to be, according to Article 157 of the constitution.
