Nepal’s foreign ministry reminds diplomatic corps and CMs to follow Vienna Convention

Kathmandu, March 23

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reminded the diplomatic corps in Kathmandu, chief ministers of the provinces, and mayors of municipalities to follow the Vienna Convention when dealing with one another.

This comes as the chief ministers and the mayors started talking to the diplomatic community on their own, without the knowledge of the ministry, which is the only authorised body in the country to do so.

Sources say that foreign minister Pradeep Gywali recently conferred with hi-ranking officials from the ministry on the issue. The ministry then sent a note to the diplomatic community and the peoples’ representatives to adhere to diplomatic norms. A source said that the ministry has warned both sides not to conduct meetings without informing the ministry.

The ministry has also suggested that central leaders in the government should also deal with foreign diplomats in similar fashion.
