Kathmandu, May 27
The Nepali Congress says it is ready to postpone the second round of election until after a few days if the Madhesh-centric Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal agrees to contest the polls.
The main opposition, CPN-UML has, however, said no to the proposal.
At a meeting of the three major political parties on Saturday, the Prime Minister said he was also ready to postpone the elections if the agitating RJP-N agrees to come on board the electoral process. The UML’s leadership says the major concern of the RJP is that the newly-established party does not have an election symbol, and the issue can be addressed through an amendment to the election laws before the polls.
The RJP on Friday announced a series of protests targeting the June 14 elections. It has said that the elections cannot take place before the constitution is amended to address its demands.
The government, which had earlier decided to conduct local elections throughout the country on a single day, later agreed to hold the polls in two phases so that the Madheshi parties can also contest.
