Nepali Congress obstructs House meeting over Banke attack

Lawmakers of Nepali Congress stand up in protest in a House of Representatives meeting

Kathmandu, September 15

The main opposition party Nepali Congress obstructed the House of Representatives meeting on Sunday protesting an attack on the party’s Banke district president Kiran Koirala last week.

The party has been claiming that cadres of the ruling Nepal Communist Party launched the attack. Police have arrested some persons in connection with the incident, but the investigation has not produced any result till now.

Earlier in the meeting, Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa had responded to the concerns raised by the opposition lawmakers, saying some cadres of the ruling party might have been involved in the incident. He had claimed that the party had not directed its cadres for the attack.

Though the minister assured legal action against the culprits after the investigation, the opposition lawmakers continued the protest standing up from their seats.

Following that, the Speaker announced that the meeting was halted for 30 minutes.
