Nepal Telecom: It takes one more year to launch 4G service outside Kathmandu, Pokhara

Kathmandu, November 7

Nepal Telecom says it will take one more year to expand the 4G LTE internet service to major cities across the country.

It has already been nearly one year since the company introduced the service in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Private telecommunication provider, Ncell, had introduced the service five months after the NT. Ncell, however, has already expanded the service into 19 cities in various parts of the country.

The NT has just called tenders to supply core equipment necessary to expand the service. “Now, we will begin the process to appoint contractors for network equipment,” the company’s spokesperson Pratibha Baidya says, “We will connect all places of the country to our LTE network within one year.”

The company blames long procurement procedures for delay in launching the service.

“Our procurement procedures are not as easy as those of private companies. We have to prepare many documents,” Baidya maintains, “Otherwise, we were preparing to expand the service from a long ago.”

Currently, the NT has around 500,000 customers of 4G service in the two cities. But, thousands of potential customers are waiting for the service to be launched in their places.

While launching the service, the company had said it would expand the service across the country within one year. It had also unveiled a phasewise plan for the expansion.
