Nepal enters India’s power exchange market

Officials of Nepal and India sign an agreement on Nepal’s entry into the power exchange market of India, in Pokhara, in January 2019.

Kathmandu, January 25

India has agreed to let Nepal enter its power exchange market. With the agreement between the two countries, Nepal can be a player in India’s open power trade.

During a meeting of energy secretaries of Nepal and India held in Pokhara this week, India has agreed on the proposal of Nepal. The New Delhi government, however, has sought two months’ time to implement the agreement.

Spokesperson at the Ministry of Energy, Pravin Raj Aryal, says India will draft a working procedure to regulate Nepal’s presence in the market within next two months.

Nepal Electricity Authority’s Managing Director Kul Man Ghising says Nepal will participate in the market through its energy trade companies.

So far, Nepal has been trading electricity through government-to-government agreements only.

This is a remarkable achievement for Nepal as the country’s need for electricity fluctuates often; and with the presence in market, it can easily sell surplus and buy the required amount, according to Ghising.
