A key road section that connects Nepal’s two major highways will now remain open 24 hours, officials said as the widening of the road nears its competition.

Officials involved in the Narayangadh-Muglin expansion project said that tarmacking work on the road was completed on Tuesday night. They also said that the road, which connects the Prithvi Highway with the East-west highway is now free of potholes, dust and mud.

Work on widening the highway, one of the key components of Nepal’s highway network, began in 2015. The project was expected to be completed in 2017. However, following the earthquake and the Indian blockade, the deadline for the work was extended for 10 months. Although the highway will be open round the clock. construction work hasn’t been completed.  “Now we can continue the work without shutting the road section,” informed project engineer, Shiv Khanal.

Before Wednesday’s announcement, authorities used to shut down the busy highway during the day. Around half a dozen people have lost their lives on the highway, which has been prone to landslides.

The road was tarmacked three years after construction began.
