Minister won’t table Medical Education Bill today as UML, Maoists disagree

A meeting called by the Speaker to discuss tabling of Medical Education Bill, in Kathmandu, on Thursday, October 12, 2017.

Kathmandu, October 12

The leftist alliance comprising the CPN-UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre says it will block the government from tabling the controversial Medical Education Bill.

The government is preparing to table the bill for a decision today so as to convince Dr Govinca KC to end his 13th fast-unto-death.

Demanding endorsement of the bill in line with suggestions extended by the Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led panel, the veteran surgeon at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital is fasting unto death for  last eight days.

But, representatives of the communist parties have said during a meeting called by Speaker Onsari Gharti to discuss the government plan that they will not allow the government to table the bill.

The major bone of contention between the parties about the bill is whether new medical colleges should be established in Kathmandu Valley in next 10 years, which has forced the bill to get stuck in the House for months.

UML and Maoist leaders are against the suggestion of Mathema panel that the establishment of new schools should be banned for next 10 years.

Therefore, the parties put forth their demand at the meeting today that the bill be sent back to the parliamentary Committee on Women, Children and Social Welfare.

As the parties remained adamant, the meeting called by the Speaker ended inconclusively.

It is unlikely that the bill will not be tabled today.
