Manmohan Memorial Medical College: Ready to be sold or relocate outside Kathmandu

Kathmandu, July 27

One of the promoters of Manmohan Memorial Medical College, which apparently was a major bone of contention between the government and medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC and a reason behind Dr KC’s 27-day-long fast-unt0-death, says his institution is ready to abide by the agreement the government signed with the activist yesterday.

Nepal Health Care Cooperative Ltd (NEHCO)’s Vice-President Banshidhar Mishra says the agreement is a positive step towards reforms in the sector.

The Cooperative has invested in the College, which has already acquired an expression of interest from the government for operation.

However, the agreement signed with Dr KC yesterday forbids the government from granting the operation licence to the College for next 10 years. Instead, the College promoters have been offered two options: sell the institution to the government or relocate it to somewhere outside Kathmandu Valley as prioritised by the Medical Education Commission.

“What we want is just operating a medical college in the memory of our respected leader Manmohan Adhikari. We wanted to run it without earning profit through a cooperative,” Mishra says, “But we accept if the government runs it.”

Mishra says promoters of the College will hold a meeting and decide what to do next.
