KMC doesn’t heed Development Authority’s directive on building code

L-R: KMC Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya and KVDA Chief Bhai Kaji Tiwari

Kathmandu, February 5

In another apparent example of the tussle with the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority, the capital city’s local government has apparently rejected the Authority’s directive to correct its building code.

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City did not take any initiative to correct the code though the Authority on January 20 had issued a 15 day ultimatum for that.

The Authority’s Chief Commissioner Bhai Kaji Tiwari says the Authority has not received any response from the KMC about the directive, stating it is ‘unfortunate’.

The Authority has argued that the KMC building code is weaker than the basic house building guideline implemented by the federal government.

It has further warned that it will advocate for legal reforms to make the KMC building code null and void if the local government does not agree to follow the directive.

Earlier, an official of the KMC had accused the Authority of breaching its jurisdiction and recommended that the government scrap it.
