KC will be brought to Kathmandu by ‘force’ if his health worsens, says Education Minister

Giri Raj Mani Pokharel

Kathmandu, July 13

Minister for Education Giriraj Mani Pokharel said that medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC will be brought to Kathmandu by applying ‘force’ if his health deteriorates further.

Dr KC is on a hunger strike at the Karnali Academy of Health Sciences in Jumla for the past 14 days demanding medical reforms as per the report prepared by a high-level panel led by Dr Kedar Bhakta Mathema.

The Education Minister also informed that his ministry was preparing to send another team to Jumla to hold talks with Dr KC.

Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony of Education Journalism Award 2018 in the capital, Minister Pokharel said, “I was amazed when the team at the Nepal Medical Association refused to go to Jumla on the request of the government. They instead opted to shut health institutes.”

He further clarified that the government was not against holding talks but talking with someone whose health is in such a worse condition was not possible.

Stating that the government’s first priority was KC’s medical treatment, he said, “We might have to apply force if his organs weaken further.”
