Kathmandu city wants Valley Development Authority scrapped

Kathmandu, January 28

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has demanded that the government scrap the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority as the city government’s jurisdiction and that of the Authority clash.

The city government’s spokesperson Ishwar Man Dangol says the new constitution and subsequent laws have empowered the local governments to solve most problems at the local level, hence the Authority is not necessary.

Speaking at a function organised in Kathmandu on Monday, Dangol said the city government would formally present a proposal about scrapping the Authority to the federal government soon.

The bodies have engaged in a clash over various issues on several occasions. Of late, the Authority has been telling the KMC to revise its building code citing it is ‘weak’. The KMC, however, says the code is perfect.

Dangol insisted that the code was not weak as it was finalised in consultation with multiple stakeholders.
