Kathmandu city rolls back private school fee hike

Kathmandu, April 25

After protests from stakeholders, the local government of Kathmandu city has rolled back its decision to hike the fees of private schools running in its jurisdiction.

A meeting of the Education Committee of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City scrapped the earlier decision of School Categorisation and Monitoring Committee. Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya himself had chaired the meeting.

Shakya says the schools should not make any changes in the last year’s fee structure now.

The meeting also stated that the local government’s Education Act and School Education Management Regulations give the authority to fix school fees to the municipal executive only.

The city government leadership claims no proposal has been filed at the executive body to revise or increase schools fees so far.
