Kathmandu, November 11

An ambitious plan to assign a private firm to manage solid waste of all municipalities of Kathmandu Valley has been pushed into limbo thanks to the objection of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

Earlier, the municipal governments had signed an preliminary agreement with Nep West Pvt Ltd for waste management. Following that, the Investment Board of Nepal on June 15 already signed a project development agreement with the company.

The June agreement mentions that the deal would be implemented within next three months. However, the company has failed to execute its commitment after the capital’s local government put forth five new conditions after staffing and use of equipment.

In particular, the KMC says the private company should deposit the salary of 1,600 waste management personnel in advance, which the company has not agreed.

“Problems are likely unless we properly manage our workforce. Either the Investment Board or the investing company should take care of the staff,” says KMC Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya.
