Kandel appointed Vice-chair of National Planning Commission

Kathmandu, April 24

Economist Pushpa Kandel has been appointed Vice-chairman of the National Planning Commission, the government body responsible for formualating developments goals and plans.

Kandel, who is also the chief of the ruling party’s centrai audit committee, has also taught at Tribhuvan University. The government has also named Krishna Prasad Oli, Usha Jha, Dil Bahadur Gurung, Sushil Bhatta, Min Bhadur Shahi and Ram Kumar Phuyal as members of the commission, said government spokesperson Minister Gokul Banskota.

Kandel is considered a ‘low-profile’ leader within the ranks of the UML party. According to party sources, Kandel has been aligned with the party since the Jhapa Rebellion. Kandel earned his PhD from Delhi School of Economics. He has been a part of the party’s central audit committee for the last 10 years.

During the eighth convention of the party, Kandel had come under attack from members of the party for saying that federalism and decentralisation were not beneficial for the country.
