Join polls now, will amend constitution later: PM tells Madheshi parties

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba addresses the Parliament meeting, on Friday, June 9, 2017.

Kathmandu, June 9

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has assured that the constitution will be amended, but only after the second phase of local level elections scheduled for June 28.

He therefore urged agitating Madhesh-centric parties to join the elections.

Addressing the Parliament meeting today first time after his election to the top executive position, the Nepali Congress party chief said, “The constitution amendment is impossible before the second phase of polls. The amendment should be endorsed immediately after the polls in the consent of opposition leaders as well.”

He argued that the government was sensitive towards increasing the acceptance of constitution and facilitating the participation of Madheshi parties in the polls.

“What I want to tell Madheshi parties is that,” he said, “I will amend the constitution anyhow. I hope the opposition will support. Please take part in the polls.”

Meanwhile, Deuba urged the main opposition, CPN-UML, not to exaggerate the issue of ballot paper tearing in Bharatpur Metropolitan City of Chitwan district.

He said such incidents were normal in past elections as well, hence all sides should accept the decision of Election Commission.
