(Updated) One killed as police open fire on Jhapa protesters

Jhapa, October 27

An 11-year-old child died as police opened fire on protesters in Birtamod of Jhapa district on Friday.

The victim is Naresh Thapa from Arjundhara-11.

Seven persons have sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at local health facilities.

Police had opened 17 rounds of fire to control the mob demonstrating in front of a local police post.

Jhapa town tense as locals demand probe into alleged murder; indefinite curfew clamped

Tension ran high in Birtamod of Jhapa district on Friday as locals demonstrating with a demand to investigate into an alleged murder of an 11-year-old boy turned violent.

The local administration clamped an indefinite curfew to control the demonstration.

Laxman Shiwakoti from Tinpaini, Arjundhara-11 was found dead in a puddle on the day of Badadashain Tika, September 30. The family had claimed he was murdered.

After locals intensified the demonstration demanding the probe today, the administration clamped the curfew in the central market area of the town around Muktichok.

Some police personnel and protesters have sustained injuries.

Meanwhile, the protesters vandalised the vehicle of Birtamod Municipality Mayor Dhruba Shiwakoti (Ba 10 Cha 3061) and another of the Municipality (Me 1 Jha 121). They also pelted stones at his house.

The District Traffic Police Office has also been vandalised.

Two motorbikes belonging to the Mayor’s son and former lawmaker Prem Giri have been set on fire.
