Italian company CMC to leave Melamchi Drinking Water Project unfinished

Kathmandu, December 17

Italian construction company CMC has announced that it has decided to not continue with the Melamchi Drinking Water Project. However, the government has refused to accept it.

Representatives from the company visited the project office on Sunday with a letter saying that they would not be continued the work. But after instructions from the Ministry of Drinking Water the Melamchi Drinking Water Project refused to acknowledge the letter.

According to a source, the Italian company cited lack of funds as its reason for deciding to withdraw.

CMC wanted the government to provide additional funds, but the government argued that it would only give funds upon the completion of the project.

After the government refused to give funds, officials from CMC were on their way back to their country. However, after officials learnt of their plan, eight, including the project manager, were detained in Thamel on Sunday.
