Interns handle Bir Hospital’s emergency ward as doctors choose lucrative positions

File: Bir Hospital

Kathmandu, September 19

As permanent health workers posted at the emergency ward of Bir Hospital choose to get transferred to other departments of the health facility eyeing economic benefits, the emergency ward has been left with interns.

The ward receives more than 350 patients every day. The administration has allocated more than 50 doctors and nurses to the ward. However, there are only interns these days.

Some staff of the oldest and biggest health institution of the country have reported the problem to the administration frequently, but the administration could not solve the problem, according to them.

One of the staff says the administration cannot do anything as the doctors and nurses use political connections to station themselves in lucrative departments.

On the other hand, there are complaints galore at various agencies regarding irregularities in those departments. Once the National Vigilance Centre carried out an investigation and submitted the report also, but it is gathering dust.
