Hunger strike is Dr KC’s ‘regular job’ and Congress needs not launch protest over that: Dahal

Nepal Communist Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has commented that staging hunger strikes time and again has been a ‘regular job’ of medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC and hence the main opposition party Nepali Congress needs not launch any protest over the issue.

Dr KC has staged hunger strikes so many times that the Nepali society is used to it; hence the Congress needs not make it an issue anymore, according to him.

“Fasting is his job. Talks are held, agreements are made after that,” he says, “It is all a natural process.”

Speaking at a function organised on the occasion of 40th death anniversary of Pushpa Lal Shrestha, the leader also accused the opposition party of trying to do politics over the ‘dead body of Dr KC’.

“What does the Congress want? Does it want to abduct the democratic republic by holding Dr KC?” he said, “Is the Congress such fragile, weak and undemocratic?”

He, however, maintained that it was the government’s responsibility to save the life of fasting doctor. “But, the other side (opposition) is not serious about it,” he complained.

Dr KC has been staging a fast-unto-death, for the 15th time in past few years, demanding a new medical education law as suggested by a panel led by educationist Kedar Bhakta Mathema. The opposition party has also piled the pressure on the government to meet his demand at the earliest.

The party has warned of obstructing all Parliament meetings till the demand is met.
