Kathmandu, November 18
Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa says Nepali officials should be careful while distributing naturalised citizenship as several countries around the world have lost their sovereignty over the issue.
Thapa, who was speaking at a meeting of Parliament’s State Affairs Committee, said that his government would investigate cases in which foreigners have obtained Nepali citizenship. He said he was aware that thousands of foreigners have bought citizenship.
“There are several issues that impact a country’s sovereignty. If we do not pay adequate attention to the distribution of naturalised citizenship, it will pose a threat to our sovereignty,” said Thapa. He said that the new citizenship law should prevent individuals from obtaining citizenship based on birth.
