Kathmandu, May 17

Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa claims the government has already begun another round of the search for murderers of Madan Bhandari, a popular communist leader of the country who drowned in Trishuli River from Dasdhunga of Chitwan district under mysterious circumstances, on May 16, 1993.

At a function organised on the 26th death anniversary of Bhandari and his comrade Jeev Raj Aashrit in Kathmandu on Friday, Thapa hoped that the murderers of Bhandari and Aashrit would be identified soon.

“We have begun an investigation into the case,” Thapa said standing in front of the statue of Bhandari in Koteshwar, “The murderers will be identified soon.”

The Minister, however, did not divulge any details about the investigation process.

Bhandari was the General Secretary of then CPN-UML whereas Aashrit was the chief of party’s organisation department. A jeep carrying them had submerged in the mighty river. The driver of the vehicle, Amar Lama, had survived the accident. He was murdered many years later.

Bidya Devi Bhandari, the wife of Madan, who began her political career after the tragedy, is serving the second term as the country’s president now.
