Govt to reuse old traffic lights in Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu, May 18

After successfully testing the operation of old traffic lights in Naya Baneshwor and Maharajgunj, the Department of Roads has said that it will soon repair old traffic lights and install them at various other junctions of the Kathmandu Valley.

The Department has already concluded a study for the reuse.

Earlier, the Department had tried to install an ‘intelligent traffic control system’ with the financial and technical support from Asian Development Bank. The attempts, however, failed.

A meeting of the Cabinet had directed the Department to bring the traffic lights into operation. Following the directive, the traffic lights were installed in Naya Baneshwor and Maharajgunj.

Ra 1.5 million was spent to repair traffic lights in Naya Baneshwor whereas Rs 2.7 million was spent to repair them in Maharajgunj.

Around Rs 2 million needs to be spent for the repairing of traffic lights in more than 20 locations of the Valley, according to the Department.
