The government is preparing to improve market monitoring activities ahead of Dashain and Tihar, two greatest annual festivals of the country, which are being celebrated in October and November respectively.

The monitoring will be improved so as to control likely black marketing, artificial shortage of goods and other deceiving activities before and during the festivals, according to the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control.

The Department’s spokesperson Purna Chandra Basti says staff have already been mobilised to prepare for the monitoring. Staff of other agencies under the Department will also be mobilised.

Traders dealing with daily consumables including groceries and food items will be targeted during the monitoring.

The government has been strengthening market monitoring in the run-up to festivals every year. However, consumers complain they have been largely nominal and ineffective.
