Govt says 335 Nepali migrant workers are imprisoned abroad

Kathmandu, June 27

The government of Nepal says at least 335 nationals of the country are imprisoned abroad on multiple charges. Most of them are migrant workers working in various Gulf countries.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali says the highest number of Nepali prisoners is in Saudi Arabia. There are 219 Nepalis jailed.

Likewise, United Arab Emirates has imprisoned 63 Nepalis, Thailand 39, Bahrain nine, Singapore four, China three. Israel and Oman have two Nepali jailbirds each whereas Cambodia and Lebanon have one each.

Gyawali assures that the government is negotiating with the host countries to reduce their punishment. He says initiatives are underway to scale down capital punishment to life sentence, and to release people jailed with fake charges.

In another context, he informs that 20 Nepalis are in coma at various foreign hospitals including 11 in Qatar, five in Saudi Arabia, and two each in Bahrain and United Arab Emirates. He says Nepali missions abroad are taking care of them.

The Minister was speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives today.
