Govt doctors on strike against staff adjustment law

A notice at the OPD of Bir Hospital informs the closure of service, on Wednesday, February 27, 2019.

Kathmandu, February 27

Govt doctors have launched an indefinite strike at other wards except the emergency ones at government hospitals across the country from Wednesday.

The doctors resorted to the strike upon a call from the Government Doctors’ Association Nepal (GoDAN), which has been carrying different protest programmes for last few days against the new civil servant adjustment law.

They have demanded that the government doctors be kept under the federal government in the bureaucratic reshuffle.

Patients have been hit hard due to the strike. Big government hospitals of Kathmandu Valley including Bir, TUTH, Kanti and Shukraraj Memorial have shut down OPD services. There are reports that hospitals outside Kathmandu have also shut down other services except the emergency.

“The 72 hour ultimatum served to the government to address our demand, but the government did not make any response,”GoDAN President Dr Dipendra Pandey says, “Hence, he shut down the services except emergency as per our announced protest programme.”

Nepal Medical Association, the umbrella organisation of Nepali medical doctors, has extended solidarity with the announced protest programmes.
