The government on Friday opened fair price shops in various parts of the country in a bid to facilitate the shopping of members of the public in the run-up to upcoming big festivals of Dashain, Tihar and Chhath.

Consumers can get attractive discounts on various commodities of day-to-day use at these shops.

Around three dozen shops have been established across the country, according to the Ministry of Supplies.

Nepal Food Corporation, Salt Trading Corporation Limited and Dairy Development Corporation among other government-run entities have also announced discount offers for customers visiting such fair price shops in the run-up to the festivals.

The Ministry says it has provided Rs 18.5 million to the STC and Rs 6 million to the NFC as subsidies to provide discounts to the consumers.

Meanwhile, Nepal Oil Corporation says there will not be any shortage of petroleum products before and during the festivals.
