General strike in Birgunj demanding provincial capital

Protesters block the road to press the government to name Birgunj as the capital of Province 2, on Sunday, February 4, 2018.

Birgunj, February 4

Locals of Birgunj in Parsa district have imposed a general strike in the bordering city today demanding that it be made the capital of Province 2.

A struggle committee has called the strike coinciding with the first meeting of Provincial Assembly in Janakpur. The committee had been staging different forms of protest since the government named Janakpur as the temporary provincial capital.

Some lawmakers from Parsa, Bara and Rautahat district have also warned of forming a new province if there demand for naming Birgunj as the capital is not heeded.

Meanwhile, life has been hit hard due to the strike today. All market places and public transportation vehicles are shut. Academic institutions and factories and enterprises have also been closed in protest of the decision.

Ambulances, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles, however, have been allowed to ply.

The protesters vandalised three vehicles including an Indian jeep.

The panel says the agitation is intensified if their demand is not met.
