All major Nepali and English broadsheet dailies published from Kathmandu on Monday have given the priority to a host of issues from political, sociocultural and economic spheres. The Nepal Oil Corporation’s decision to reduce the prices of petroleum products citing the change in prices in the international market, and the failure of Constitutional Council to nominate the name of next chief justice have been covered on the front pages by almost all newspapers.

There are few news reports about the controversial Asia Pacific Summit that concluded in Kathmandu on Sunday.

NOC slashes fuel prices

According to the new tariff that came to effect from last night, the price of a litre of diesel, petrol and kerosene has been reduced by Rs 2 each, according to newspaper reports. The government owned fuel distribution monopoly has cited changes in the international market.

Meanwhile, Naya Patrika comments that the reduction in the prices in nominal as the Corporation is in Rs 40 million profit every day these days.

A snippet in Nagarik reports that the Constitutional Council decided to study both the names recommended by the Judicial Council further before picking the one for next Chief Justice. Therefore, the Council has called its next meeting for Saturday.

Kantipur, however, claims the meeting ended indecisive as the main opposition leader Sher Bahadur Deuba left the meeting halfway citing his other engagements.

Nepali Ambassador to Australia faces trafficking charge

Nepal’s Ambassador to Australia, Lucky Sherpa, has been accused of human trafficking, reports The Himalayan Times. The envoy’s driver Wongchhu Sherpa has accused the Ambassador and her husband of involvement in the illegal activities.

The driver told a private TV channel of Nepal that he paid Rs 3.3 million to Ambassador Sherpa’s husband to go to Australia, according to the report.

Madhav Kumar Nepal’s role in Asia Pacific Summit

Naya Patrika claims in its lead story that former prime minister and senior leader of ruling Nepal Communist Party, Madhav Kumar Nepal, is the key person behind the ‘successful’ completion of controversial Asia Pacific Summit in Kathmandu.

The report claims that Nepal had convinced the government to co-host this function organised by the Universal Peace Federation which has been promoting the agenda of the Unification Church.

Congress CWC meeting to continue for next few days

The Central Working Committee meeting of Nepali Congress that begun on Thursday last week is likely to continue within next few days, Nepal Samacharpatra reports.

The meeting is currently finalising a proposal that it will table at the party’s mahasamiti meeting to amend the party statute.

The mahasamiti meeting has been scheduled to begin in Kathmandu on December 14.

Transitional justice bodies prepare to wrap up assignment

The Kathmandu Post reports in a three column lead story that two transitional justice mechanisms are preparing to wrap up their assignment by submitting progress reports to the government.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons have begun the preparations after the government hinted that it would not extend the term, according to the report.

Their tenure is set to expire on February 9 next year.

NAC all set to resume Japan flights

It has been 11 years since Nepal’s national flag carrier, Nepal Airlines Corporation, stopped its regular flights to Japan due to lack of aircraft. However, the NAC has now begun preparations to result regular flights, according to a three column story in Karobar.

The Corporation says it will conduct three flights per week to Osaka from coming February.

One of the two recently bought wide body aircraft will be used for Japan flights.

Till 2007, there were two flights to Japan every week.
