Kathmandu, August 23

The government has decided to redefine the duties and responsibilities of the Foreign Employment Promotion Board as well as give it a new name.

Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Gokarna Bista says the board will now be transformed into ‘Foreign Employment Management Board.’ Bista, who was addressing member lawmakers of Parliament’s Consumer and Labour Affairs Committee, said it was no longer the government’s job to promote foreign employment. The minister said that the government wants to create an environment where young people can find jobs within the country.

“Foreign employment is the last resort for many Nepalis. The sector needs a management board rather than a promotion board,” he told lawmakers. He added that the government has already prepared a proposal to restructure the board, which has been assigned to provide compensation to the kin of Nepalis who die working abroad. Similarly, the board also organises different awareness campaigns for prospective workers.
