Five Nepalis held with banned Indian banknotes worth Rs 1.6 million

Kathmandu, May 13

Police in Kathmandu on Sunday night arrested five Nepali nationals in possession of banned Indian banknotes worth Rs 1.6 million.

Shambhu Pariyar of Dhading, Ram Bikram Khadka of Dolakha, Santosh Thapa Magar of Kaski, Dhan Dhwaj Tamang of Kavre and Rajendra Ghising of Kavre were arrested from a hotel in Thamel, according to DSP Habindra Bogati of the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu.

Acting on a tip-off, police had raided the hotel last night, according to Bogati.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had banned notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination  in November 2016 in his bid to control the ‘shadow economy’ and investment in various illegal activities. Whereas Nepal has been insisting that the New Delhi government let Nepalis with these banknotes make exchanges, India has not provided such facility yet.

Police are clueless about where they got the money from.

Meanwhile, the suspects have been sent to the Department of Revenue Investigation for further investigation.
