Embattled Supreme Court Justice Joshee quits

Kathmandu, February 19

The Supreme Court’s senior-most Justice Deepak Raj Joshee, who was denined the leadership of the judiciary by Parliament’s Hearing Committee, has tendered his resignation.

Joshee subimitted his resignation to Chief Justice Cholendra Sumsher Rana, who is to present it before the President.

Joshee, who was nominated to the post of Chief Justice by the Constitutional Council in July, was denied the position by the hearing committee after members raised questions about his educational qualifications. Joshee was the first CJ nominee whose nomination was rejected by the parliamentary committee.

Joshee went on leave after his nomination was rejected to allow Om Prakash Mishra to take charge of the apex court. When CJ Cholendra Sumsher Rana was named the new head of the court, Joshee was relieved of his responsibilities.
