Election in two phases unacceptable: UML

Ilam, April 10

Nepal’s main opposition party the UML has said it cannot accept a proposal by the ruling party CPN Maoist Centre to organise the upcoming local elections in two phases.

It has said it also rejects Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s proposal to remove local bodies’ chiefs and vice-chiefs from the the electoral college that will elect the country’s president.

Party General Secretary Iswar Pokhrel and Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Subas Nembang, who were speaking to mediapersons on Mondua, said the government was conspiring to cancel the elections under the viel of organising it in two phases. “The Prime Minister is incorrect to say that the UML has already agreeed to his proposal to present a fresh constitution amendment bill in Parliament,” Nembang said adding that the Prime Minister has not consulted the UML on the issue of constitution amendment.

He informed that the Prime Minsiter talked to the UML leadership on the issue before his visit to China, but Dahal has not followed-up on the conversation. Nembang criticised the government for failing to appoint Nepal Police’s IG and sort out a dispute between the two Deputy Prime Ministers.

Pokhrel said amendment to the constitution was not required to conduct elections.
