Education ministry orders medical colleges to refund fees they overcharged

Kathmandu, March 21

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology on Thursday decided that medical colleges overcharging MBBS students will have to refund the excess amount within a month.

A meeting between Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel, Tribhuvan University VC Tirtha Khaniya, medical colleges and student union representatives decided that medical colleges had to refund the excess amount.

The ministry has said that it will monitor whether the colleges have refunded the amount or not.

Pokhara’s Gandaki Medical College and Lalitpur’s Kist Medical College have been accused of charging additional fees against the rules.

The government fixed a ceiling of Rs 4.24 million for MBBS students enrolled in private medical colleges outside the Valley. However, Gandaki college was reportedly charging Rs 800,000 to Rs 1.2 million extra as admission fees.

Students had filled a fraud case against the owner of Gandaki Medical College in the district court.

Agitating students on March 19 had padlocked offices of Tribhuvan University vice-chancellor, registrar, rector and dean of Institute of Medicine, demanding action against medical colleges seeking additional fee and barring MBBS students from taking exams.
