Each Nepali has a ‘loan’ of Rs 24,147: Nepal Rastra Bank

Nepal’s domestic and foreign debt burden has increased to Rs 697.37 billion as of the last fiscal year 2016/17, the Nepal Rastra Bank says.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics’ projection, Nepal’s population this year is around 28.8 million. That means, each Nepali owes Nepal and foreign nations Rs 24,147.

In 2016, Nepal’s total debt was Rs 615 billion and per capita share was Rs 21,633.

Of total debt, Rs 283 billion is owed to the domestic sector whereas Rs 413 billion is the foreign debt.

Meanwhile, the share of total debt in the gross domestic product has decreased last year. In the fiscal year 2015/16, the debt was 27.7 per cent of GDP, whereas it was only 26.8 per cent in 2016/17.
