Deprived of all responsibilities, Deepak Raj Joshee goes on home leave

Deepak Raj Joshee attends a meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee, on Thursday, July 26, 2018.

Kathmandu, January 4

The seniormost justice of Supreme Court, Deepak Raj Joshee, has decided to go on home leave after he was denied all assignments by the new Chief Justice.

Cholendra Shamsher JB Rana, after taking over the leadership of the country’s Supreme Court on Wednesday, had said he would not assign any case to Joshee as the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee had rejected him for the Chief Justice’s position last year.

On Thursday, Rana reshuffled responsibilities of the justices, stripping Rana of his membership of the constitutional bench and the Judicial Council. Removing Joshee, Rana has appointed third-in-rank justice Deepak Kumar Karki as the Council member.

It has been learned that Rana is continuously putting pressure on Joshee to quit.

Sources say ruling Nepal Communist Party also want’s Joshee’s resignation at the earliest.

Rana, who will become Nepal’s chief justice for nearly four years, does not want to disappoint the ruling party. Hence, he is not in favour of welcoming Joshee back, according to them.
