Dailekh, March 12

A group of people’s representatives in Dailekh had sought police protection after a Maoist splinter group demanded their resignation along with some donation for their outfit.

The representatives say that the cadres of the Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN Maoist group first wrote to them asking for their resignation and money, and later resorted to calling them over the phone. The local government officials met Karnali Province police chief Mohan Bikram Shah demanding police protection.

“We had a group of representatives come to us saying they feel that their security has been compromised,” Shah said. “I assured them that we are committed to controlling criminal activities in the province,” he added.

The Chand outfit is not a political party, it is a criminal gang and police will arrest people involved in criminal activities, Shah said.
