CPN-UML won’t let Parliament discuss Constitution amendment, no matter what, says KP Oli

Kathmandu, December 21

KP Sharma Oli, chair of the CPN-UML, said on Wednesday the party will not allow discussions on the Constitution Amendment Bill in the Parliament, come what may.

Oli said his party will offer its support if the Prachanda-led government announces elections.

Oli, during a meeting with a team from the Former Lawmakers’ Forum Nepal at his residence in Balkot, accused the government of conspiring against the elections.

Ending the transition period by conducting elections is the main task of this government, Oli pointed, adding: This government has forgotten its rights and responsibilities. It is busy fulfilling vested interests of foreign forces.

During the meeting, former lawmakers advised the two major parties — the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML — to resolve national problems by working together.

On his part, Oli said this is impossible as the Nepali Congress has a policy that two of the largest parties (in the Parliament) should not work together.

Oli said: Let them run the government for now, we do not want to lead the government, nor we want our shares in it. We have told them that we will offer our support if the government announces elections.

Omkar Prasad Shrestha, chair of the forum, requested Oli to block the passage of the Bill without giving up his stance.

  • Allowing the House to discuss the Constitution Amendment Bill is out of the question
  • Let the government announce elections, we will support the initiative
  • Working together with the Nepali Congress is not possible. The NC policy does not let the two largest parties in the Parliament work together
  • This government is busy fulfilling vested interests of foreigners. It has forgotten its rights and responsibilities
