Constitution Amendment: Deliberations begin in Parliament

File

Kathmandu, February 23

Deliberations have begun in Nepal’s Parliament over a key constitution amendment bill drafted to address the demands of the Madheshi Morcha.

The principal opposition, UML, stayed quit as members of the ruling coalition took part in the deliberations while MPs from the Nepal Workers and Peasants’ Party shouted slogans against the amendment. They said that the bill was against “Nepal’s national interests.”

The UML, which had been blocking the ruling coalition’s attempt to put the amendment to vote, changed its stance on the issue earlier today. The deliberations began after it agreed to allow the ruling coalition to do so “just for one day.”

MPs from the Madheshi Morcha also took part in the deliberations.
