Conflict victims demand amendment before picking transitional justice officials

Conflict victims and their families stage a demonstration at Maitighar Mandala, on Monday, April 29, 2019.

Kathmandu, April 29

Conflict victims and their families have demanded that the government amend the act related to the functioning of Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons before appointing new officials in them.

The victims and rights activists staged a demonstration at Maitighar Mandala on Monday morning, and raised concerns over the government’s preparation to appoint the officials.

The demonstrators demanded that both the commissions include their representatives, arguing that the law must be amended to ensure it.

They claimed that a Supreme Court order also told the government to amend the act before appointing the new officials.

The government has formed a five member committee led by former chief justice Om Prakash Mishra to recommend officials for the twin commissions. The committee has already collected a few dozen applications, according to media reports.
