An influential leader of the main opposition Nepali Congress has claimed that Italian contractor CMC quit the Melamchi Water Supply Project halfway as government officials demanded bribe in the form of commission from them.

Prakash Man Singh says Minister for Water Supply Bina Magar and former Water Supply Secretary Gajendra Thakur sought bribe from the company, forcing the contractor to run away.

Speaking at a function organised in Chabahil of Kathmandu on Friday, the opposition lawmaker accused the incumbent government of indulging in corruption and obstructing development works. He said other corruption scandals would also come out in the future.

Singh was of the view that elected officials at local and provincial levels could not meet expectations of their voters due to the underperformance of federal government.

“What did the government with the two thirds majority support do?,” he said, “The country’s situation is worse than what it was before the elections.”

“From economic and social perspectives, this government is a failure.”
