Kathmandu, October 8

Like in past years, more climbers have applied to climb ‘lower’ peaks than eight-thousanders for the autumn climbing season this year also, says the Department of  Tourism.

So far, as many as 92 climbing teams have applied for the permit to climb various mountains between 6,500 metres and 8,000 metres. The Department informs that the groups include 708 persons.

The Department has expected more footfalls on the lower peaks this season. The applications are open for around next 40 days.

Last year, total 1,125 climbers from 163 teams had received permits to climb the lower peaks. The Department says the applicants may outnumber last year’s data this time.

Besides the peaks below the height of 8,000 metres, the Manaslu (8,156 m) has also been a major attraction among the climbers during the autumn. Total 21 expedition teams have received permit for the Manaslu climbing, according to Department’s Director General Dinesh Bhattarai.

Climbers generally prepare to try eight-thousanders by climbing lower peaks, according to Bhattarai.

There are eight eight-thousanders and 20 lower peaks in Nepal.
