Civic polls: UDMF’s strategy is to remain non-committal

Kathmandu, March 24

Leaders of the agitating Madheshi Morcha have adopted a strategy to remain non-committal to participate in the upcoming local elections.

Following a meeting of the alliance on Thursday, Madhesi parties told Prime Minister Prachanda that they will not sign any new agreement, but will wait to see how the government addressed its demand to amend the new constitution.

According to a Morcha leader, members of the alliance agreed to the same and decided to go to Madhesh to prepare of protests if things do not head in the right direction. The leaders want to be in Madhesh to prepare for local elections, if in case an agreement is reached and they are forced to take part int the polls.

Prime Minister Prachanda is likely to press the Morcha to put its demand to re-draw provincial boundaries on hold for the moment and accept an ‘incomplete’ amendment. But that is unlikely change the Morcha’s position.
