Cancelling Budhigandaki contract was government’s mistake: Dahal

CPN-Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal speaks at a function in Chitwan, on Sunday, November 5, 2017.

Chitwan, November 15

CPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal says the government’s recent decision to scrap the agreement signed with a Chinese company to construct the ambitious Budhigandaki Hydropower Project was a mistake.

He says the project would open a door to progress and prosperity if it was implemented as planned.

Dahal, who had led the coalition government which signed the agreement, said the contract was finalised after a very hard work. The government, however, while cancelling the contract, had claimed it was signed imprudently.

Meanwhile, the leader also complains that Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his party Nepali Congress did not consult him and his party CPN-Maoist Centre about the decision. He says his party is still a significant member of the ruling coalition and its consent is necessary for major decisions.

“The contract has be scrapped unilaterally,” he said while speaking at a function in Chitwan today, “It is now evident that the government is not heading towards economic development and prosperity. The government is operated for narrow political interests and prejudices.”
