Bird flu surfaces again in Pokhara, culling begins

Kaski, March 5

Bird flu has surfaced again in Pokhara. A week after detection of the flu strain in Mina Pariyar’s farm in Khaltemasina, chickens in Dipendra KC’s farm at the same area caught bird flu. KC’s chicken farm is around 150 metres away from Pariyar’s farm.

Thagendra Prasad Aryal, veterinarian and information officer at the Kaski district veterinary office, said: After chickens at KC’s farm started dying one after the other, we sent samples to the Department of Animal Health. Tests at the department confirmed that the birds had avian influenza.

Subsequently, we have declared the places lying within a perimeter of 1.5-km from KC’s farm a crisis zone, Aryal informed.

He said culling of birds and their disposal is going on in the area. Culling started in the afternoon, he said, adding that they have so far culled 400 chickens.

Meanwhile, local administration has imposed a ban on transport of poultry and poultry-related products to and from Pokhara, in view of repeated incidents of bird flu in Khaltemasina of Pokhara.
