Former Prime Minister and Naya Shakti Party Nepal coordinator Baburam Bhattarai has demanded that an authority be established to construct the ambitious Budhigandaki Hydropower Project.

His statement comes after the government reportedly handed over the contract of the 1,200 megawatt project to the China Gezhouba Group Company.

But, the former prime minister says the government should make the investment and develop it as a multipurpose project.

“Budhigandaki should be moved ahead incorporating various sectors including electricity, water and tourism,” he said at an interaction organised at the Ministry of Energy on Thursday, “For that, a Budhigandaki Development Authority should be formed immediately.”

Bhattarai suggested the government seek subsidised loans to collect funds for the project.

He warned that implementing the government decision to let the Chinese company handle the project would turn suicidal for the country as it would keep Nepalis in a debt trap.
