An NCP sympathiser’s open letter to the party leadership

L-R: KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal

Dear leaders,

The newly unified party seems to be falling as it has not effectively communicated its policies to the general public. Consequently, the youth’s attraction to communism is gradually decreasing.

The culture of reading books and understanding ideologies is not what youth seek today and we cannot expect them to feel the depth of Marx and Lenin on their own. With agenda-based politics on the rise currently, youth are in no mood to realise the struggles in political development and value the olds. On the other hand, the opposition party Nepali Congress is introducing many weapons to attract the support towards it by selling the word ‘democracy’. On our side, we are not able to market the value and charm of scientific socialism.

The word ‘communism’ has thousands of meanings as it is a myriad of philosophies. The Nepal Communist Party does not align to all of what the word means; and that is where we are failing to communicate.

Communism is being tagged as the ideology of autocracy and dictatorship. It is very true we want the ‘dictatorship of the proletariat’ as current political and economic doctrine will be a detriment to the poor and powerless.

Communist are the ones who can organise things and develop institutions; but today, we are failing.  Heavy media mobilisation against the government, and indulging government in the controversy from one way or the other have encouraged the majority of the youth to go against the ruling party.

Constant propagation by the opposition party to diminish the value of communism is another threat. Top leaders of the party have been attempting to thrash the communist party with the term ‘autocratic’. At this time, the only task the Congress has is to hit the ideology of the communist party and make the government unpopular, ultimately to solicit the support on its side. The NCP should be able to give a counter to all of these challenges.

When we are struggling to graduate from the level of least developed country to a developing economy, an overnight growth is not possible. With already so many loopholes in the policies, wrong decisions by past governments and unsettled agendas of the people, the country, to get back to the right trajectory, needs time and that is why the ruling party is elected for five years.

In the past , the communists were the best examples of communicators and that is how the party leaders were successful in the recent elections to communicate the party agendas  to the people and smashed a landslide victory. The government still has many things to give a sense of hope, but it has failed to communicate. For example, the improvement in the aviation sector, the PM Employment Programme, contribution-based social security scheme for labourers, infrastructural development (road expansion, bridge construction, international airport construction progress), the investment summit being organised in Marc are some of the issues that deserve appreciation and promotion.

The incomplete unity between the two parties has also been one of the factors affecting the party’s communication skills. Hence, it should be concluded at the earliest.

The NCP should concentrate its efforts to integrate and comprise the youth in the framework of scientific socialism through digital marketing, online spaces and engaging workshops so that youth can choose what they really believe for and not for what they are made to believe.
