Kathmandu, February 7
If what the government currently plans is implemented well, three major road crossings in the Kathmandu Valley will be equipped with underpasses to let vehicles crossing the roads ply underground within next five years.
While the underpass at Kalanki junction will be constructed within next few months, the government has begun studying possibility of constructing similar structures in Naya Baneshwor and Maharajgunj.
The Department of Roads says it has begun selecting consultants for feasibility study for the construction in two new places. The Department plans to complete all construction works in next four years.
It will take around 10 months for the feasibility study, according to the Department’s Deputy Director General Arjun Jung Thapa.
“We think underpasses are necessary along with road expansion to get rid of traffic jams in Kathmandu,” Thapa says, “Therefore, we will launch a feasibility study in two places.”
The Department says both the projects will be constructed with domestic investment. However, a Chinese company has expressed its interest in the construction in Maharajgunj.
China has invested in the construction of underpass in Kalanki. The company leading the construction works there is also Chinese.
